Miracle Can’t Find Strike Zone, Generals Win 11-1 in Seven Innings

07/20/2023 9:35 PM -

GRIFFITH, Ind. – Nathaniel Garcia and the Elkhart County Miracle failed to find the strike zone against the Griffith Generals, as they walked in as many runs as they gave up in an 11-1 seven-inning ball game. Four out of the eleven Generals runs scored on walks or hit-by-pitches.

Garcia was tagged for the loss, as he gave up seven runs on seven walks, one hit, and three hit batters in 1.1 innings. He likely would have given up more runs if not for a heads-up triple play by the Elkhart County defense to end the first inning.

Alex White was a horse for the Generals on the mound, as he gave up one unearned run in six innings, striking out six. White, who typically works out of the bullpen, was fully prepared to go the distance for the Generals tonight, as he said, “There’s a text I sent to [coach] Jemar: ‘I can give you six [innings] on Thursday.’” And sure enough, he did. White “leaned on his changeup” in his dominant outing.

Interim manager Ryan Jemar is now 2-0 on the season as the Generals skipper, both wins being 11-1 run-rules at Brian Jennings Field. Jemar cited several keys to the Griffith victory: “Very selective at the plate. We only had five hits, but we took walks when we needed to take walks. Proud of [Alex] White and [Ryan] Polly. Limited walks, that was a good thing to see.”

Another honorable mention goes to the Generals defense, as Max Hensler, Nic Altobelli, and Billy Jones all had at least one hit-robbing play. Jones also had a two-run single in the sixth to secure the run-rule, his first hit since his hand injury on June 18.

The Generals will look to replicate their success against the same Miracle team tomorrow night at 7:10.
